Ebru is the traditional art of paper marbling, combining colour, water and creativity in a unique way. Each pattern is created directly on the surface of the water and then carefully transferred onto paper, resulting in an original piece that can never be completely replicated.
The Ebru workshop is an opportunity to discover this fascinating technique, experiment with colours and create your own patterns, with no previous experience required.
Ebru, also known as Turkish marbling, is a traditional art technique in which colours are applied to a specially prepared water surface. Using different tools and movements, the colours are shaped into floral, flowing, abstract and other decorative patterns.
Once the design is complete, a sheet of paper is carefully placed onto the surface of the water. The colours are transferred onto the paper, creating a unique Ebru artwork.
What makes this technique special is that every pattern is one of a kind. The same movement or combination of colours can never produce exactly the same result, giving each piece its own character.
Unlike traditional painting, Ebru is not created directly on paper. Instead, the composition is first created on the surface of the water, where the colours move and interact with one another.
Using brushes, droppers and different tools, you can add colour, create lines and shape the pattern. Every new movement changes the composition, making the process one that requires both patience and spontaneity.
That is what makes Ebru not only an artistic technique, but also a relaxing and engaging creative experience.
During the workshop, you’ll learn the basic steps of the Ebru technique through hands-on practice and have the opportunity to create your own patterns on water.
We’ll experiment with different colours and shapes before transferring your creations onto paper. No previous experience is needed – the workshop is suitable for beginners and anyone looking to try something new.
At the end of the workshop, you’ll take home your own Ebru artworks created by you.
The Ebru workshop is part of the creative workshop programme organised by Atelier Madoka in Sarajevo. Our workshops offer an opportunity to learn new artistic techniques, explore your creativity and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.
Ebru is particularly fascinating because it combines art with an element of surprise. There is no way to completely control how the colours will behave on the water, so each artwork is created through a combination of intention and spontaneity.
If you’d like to try the traditional art of Ebru and discover the magic of painting on water, join us at our next workshop in Sarajevo.
